Glenn Lurie’s Synchronoss experience offers a perspective shaped by decades navigating wireless evolution. “I was and am fortunate to have gone through all the Gs,” Lurie explains, “and I think 5G is going to be a much different G.” His observation cuts to the heart of what makes this transition unique.
Previous wireless generations followed a predictable pattern: each new G delivered more volume and faster speeds. 3G brought mobile internet. 4G made streaming video practical. The formula was straightforward—better, faster connectivity for existing use cases. But 5G breaks that mold. “Every other G was about more volume and faster speeds,” Lurie notes. “This one is getting that—you’re going to get that—but it’s also about different use cases.”
This distinction matters because it reveals the foundation upon which 6G will be built. Rather than simply accelerating existing behaviors, 5G enables entirely new categories of applications: ultra-low latency communications for autonomous vehicles, massive IoT deployments connecting billions of sensors, and network slicing that creates virtual private networks for specific industrial applications. The first is personal cloud storage. “We have a personal cloud product that is the largest—we’re the largest player in that space in the globe,” Lurie explains. With Verizon as their largest customer and AT&T launching the product in Q1, this represents “a perfect example of an enhanced feature that the carrier can bring to the table with their own brand and give customers a choice as to where they want their all their content, all their videos, all their documents, etc., to be stored and protected.”
The second example is even more forward-looking: the Cross Carrier Messaging Initiative. T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon formed a joint venture to advance Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging, with Synchronoss as their key platform partner. “This is another example of utilizing 5G to deliver a completely new and enhanced digital experience for customers,” Lurie says. More significantly, it positions carriers to “become a complete digital advertiser, digital brand play that the carriers have looked at in the past and now this can bring that to them right on top of the 5G that they’re building.”
The Road to 6G: Timeline and Expectations
So when can we expect 6G? Industry consensus points to commercial deployment around 2030, with standardization work beginning in earnest by 2025-2026. This timeline follows the typical decade-long cycle between wireless generations, but the lessons from 5G suggest 6G’s development will be more deliberate.
Where 5G focused on enabling new use cases through enhanced capabilities, 6G will likely integrate those capabilities more seamlessly while adding new dimensions: AI-native network architecture, sensing capabilities that turn the network itself into a sensor array, holographic communications, and potentially terahertz frequency bands that dwarf 5G’s millimeter wave speeds.
But speed alone won’t define 6G’s success. The real question is whether it can solve the challenge Lurie identifies with 5G: creating clear paths to return on investment. 6G will need to deliver not just technical capabilities but economic models that justify the massive infrastructure investments required.
